Beberapa tuduhan menyebutkan bahawa Microsoft telah membuat kesepakatan rahasia dengan produsen komputer yang menginstal sistem operasi Windows pada komputer mereka. Bill Gates Meninggalkan Microsoft

Pada tahun 2000, Bill Gates memutuskan untuk mengundurkan diri sebagai CEO Microsoft. Beliau kemudian menyerahkan jabatan CEOnya kepada Steve Ballmer. Bill Gates lebih memlih untuk menjadi kepala arsitek perangkat lunak, meskipun beliau tetap menjadi ketua dewan direksi. Februari 2014, Bill Gates mengundurkan diri sebagai ketua Microsoft dan kemudian pindah ke posisi baru yaitu sebagai penasihat teknologi. CEO Microsoft pada saat itu yakni Steve Ballmer di gantikan oleh Satya Nadella yang telah berusia 46 tahun.

Pada tanggal 1 Januari 1994, Bill Gates menikahi Melinda French di Hawaii. Melinda Gates ketika itu berusia 23 tahun yang bekerja sebagai manajer produk Microsoft yang bertemu dengan Bill Gates yang merupakan bosnya yang ketika berumur 32 tahun. Melinda Gates diketahui adalah seorang wanita sangat cerdas serta terorganisir. Pada tahun 1996, putri pertama mereka, yang bernama Jennifer Katharine Gates lahir. Lalu anak kedua mereka yang bernama Rory John Gates lahir pada tahun 1999. Disusul dengan anak ketiga mereka bernama Phoebe Adele Gates yang lahir pada tahun 2002.

Pada bulan Maret 1986, Bill Gates membuat Microsoft dan melakukan penawaran saham perdana atau Initial Public Offering ( IPO ) dengan nilai sebesar $ 21 perlembar saham. Hal terebut kemudian menjadikan Bill Gates sebagai seorang jutawan di usia 31 tahun. Beliau mempunyai 45 persen saham perusahaan. Seiring dengan berjalannya waktu, saham perusahaan Microsoft terus meningkat. Pada tahun 1987, Bill Gates menjadi seorang miliarder muda saat sahamnya mencapai $90,75 per saham.

Sejak saat itu, Bill Gates berada di urutan puncak orang terkaya di Amerika versi majalah Forbes. Pada tahun 1999, kekayaan Bill Gates mencapai hingga $101 Miliar. Selama beberapa tahun, Bill Gates selalu bertengger pada posisi pertama dalam daftar orang terkaya didunia sebelum digeser oleh Jeff Bezos, yaitu pendiri situs Amazon pada tahun 2018. hal tersebut dikarenakan kekayaan Bill Gates lebih banyak beliau sumbangkan untuk amal melalui Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Di tahun 2018, kekayaan yang dimiliki Bill Gates ditaksir mencapai sebesar 92.4 milliar Dollar AS atau sekitar dengan 1.283 Triliun Rupiah menurut majalah Forbes.
